Dr. Ahmad Al-Rifai is a consultant gastroenterologist and hepatologist with extensive expertise in hepatology, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastrointestinal disorders. He holds a CCT in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and General Internal Medicine (UK) and an MA in Healthcare Ethics and Medical Law from the University of Manchester.

Dr. Al-Rifai has contributed significantly to medical research, with numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, including The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Liver International. His work spans a broad range of topics, including different areas of hepatology, inflammatory bowel disease and other GI diseases.

In addition to his research, Dr. Al-Rifai is actively involved in medical education. He has held academic positions as Chair of Medicine and Adjunct Clinical Professor at Khalifa University, as well as adjunct clinical professor at Gulf Medical University and senior honorary lecturer at Salford University and University of Newcastle. He started and directed the first GI fellowship program in the UAE and contributed to undergraduate and postgraduate training in gastroenterology and hepatology.

Philip R. Schauer, R. Matthew Walsh, Charles Miller, Bijan Eghtesad, and C.H. David Kwon. My research interest revolves around surgical outcomes and health services research. I strive to transfer the knowledge and skills I acquired from North America to the Middle East and North Africa region. Being the product of intercontinental institutions across the Middle East, North America, and Europe gives me a panoramic perspective on solutions to clinical, educational, and administrative challenges that academic surgeons come across on a day-to-day basis. Moreover, I am interested in the applications of machine learning and natural language processing in improving and guiding clinical reasoning.

Prof. El-Meteini graduated from Faculty of Medicine, AinShams University in 1985 where he completed his surgical residency program from1987 to 1990. He obtained his MS degree in general surgery in 1989. Prof. El-Meteini received his training as a transplant fellow in Cochin University hospital in Paris, France between 1990 and 1992 where he finished his MD thesis in experimental and clinical aspects of liver transplantation. In 1992, he spent one year as a registrar in the general surgery department in Saint-Louis University hospital in Paris, France. Upon his return to Egypt, Prof. El-Meteini obtained his MD degree by the end of 1993. In 1996, he received an advanced training program in HPB including living donor liver transplantation in Tokyo and Kyoto University hospitals in Japan. In 2001, Prof. El-Meteini initiated & directed the first living liver transplant program, both in adults & pediatrics, in Wady El-Neel hospital in Cairo, Egypt. In 2008, he founded the Ain-Shams Center for Organ Transplant (ASCOT) in Ain-Shams University. In Egypt, he performed the first LDLT in adults, the first dual “liver & kidney’ LDLT, the first domino LDLT in Egypt and the first laparoscopic left lobe hepatectomy in living donor. Likewise, he was the head of the committee that issued the required parameters, prerequisites and infrastructure for licensing hospitals & healthcare institutions as organ transplant centers. He is currently a member of the “Supreme Committee for Organ Transplant” and chairing the “Ethical Committee” within the Supreme Committee. He is a member in numerous national and international professional organizations including the Egyptian surgical society, head of the scientific committee of the Egyptian society of liver cancer (ESLC) and a founder member and current secretary general of the Pan-Arab Liver Transplant Society (PALTS). Likewise, he is active member of the international liver transplant society (ILTS) being within the membership committee and the IHPBA and EAHPBA.

Following his fellowship, Dr. Reichman moved to the Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana where he assumed the role of Co-Director of Living Donor Liver Transplantation and Pediatric Liver Transplantation. He also started and was the CoDirector of the abdominal transplant fellowship at Ochsner. After 5 years, he relocated to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia where he was the Surgical Director of Liver Transplantation and the Director of Pediatric Liver Transplantation. He returned to the Division of General Surgery and the UHN Transplant Program at TGH in 2019. He is the Surgical Director of the Pancreas Transplant and Islet Cell Programs and also directs the surgical fellowships for abdominal transplantation and HPB surgical oncology at the University of Toronto. His research interests include organ preservation, ex-vivo organ perfusion, and malignancies of the liver and pancreas.

I have been a consultant for over 21 years, being appointed as a Senior Lecturer/Consultant in Transplant and HPB Surgery at St. James University Hospital, Leeds, in 2002 and after working in Leeds for 11 years, subsequently moved to King’s College Hospital, London in 2013.

My specialist interest has been in transplant oncology, fatty liver disease and associated liver cancer. I also have a major interest in advanced hepatobiliary techniques, introduced laparoscopic major hepatectomy using 3D techniques at King’s and contributed to European Consensus Meetings in Liver and Pancreatic surgery. I also chaired the National Working Group on Liver Transplantation for Unresectable Colorectal Liver Metastases. I have over 140 peer reviewed publications, two significant ones that changed clinical practice and delivered over 300 lectures worldwide.

I have a strong track record in Academic leadership, Education and Training and have been Past President of the Great Britain Chapter of the IHPBA (GBIHPBA) and currently, President of the British Transplantation Society (BTS). He is a UK and European board certified HPB & Abdominal Multi-Organ Transplant Surgeon having completed his CCT (UK), FEBS (European Board of Surgery) & European Diploma in Transplantation. He has a special interest in MIS (both laparoscopic & robotic) HPB Surgery having completed further fellowships from UIC, Chicago (Robotic fellowship) and Kaohsiung, Taiwan (Transplantation fellowship) gaining further experience in Complex Liver Surgery & Transplantation.

In his previous appointment, Dr Rehan was an integral part of a large multi-centre HPB and Multi-Organ Transplant Program (live & deceased donor, adult & paediatric) that completed close to 400 liver transplants, 50 pancreas transplants and 300 kidney transplants including multi-organ transplants (liver+kidney, pancreas+kidney) in addition to numerous complex HPB resections (open, laparoscopic & robotic). His experience in HPB & Transplantation spans over 18 years. His areas of expertise include management of hepatocellular carcinoma, complex gallbladder & biliary cancers, benign and malignant pancreatic disease, surgery for portal hypertension and transplantation (liver, pancreas, kidney). He has undergone comprehensive training in all aspects of Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary disease and Transplantation. A fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Dr Rehan also has an active research interest with a research degree from Newcastle University, UK and has published over 40 scientific articles in leading peer reviewed international journals.
